Morning Prayer The entire school starts each day together in prayer. During the months of October and May we say a decade of the Rosary. We have a Morning Prayer song that we sing each day to remind us that we are one family, and we end our prayer with our school Mission Statement: St. Mary School - A Catholic Community Growing in Christ! Parents and visitors are welcome to join us in daily prayer. It is a wonderful way to start each day!
Household Program St. Mary School adopted a Household Program three years ago and it continues to grow. Each classroom is a Household, each Household has a mission, banner, and song. Every Friday the Households celebrate the Lord's Day. This consists of reading and discussing the Gospel for the upcoming Sunday. The children then go around the group and bring forth something for which they would like the group to pray. The second time they go around, they bring forth something for which they are grateful. This time together helps bring them closer as a Catholic family. Knowing your fellow classmates more deeply, knowing what they are happy or sad about makes everyone closer. It is more challenging to pick on someone when you know what they are happy or sad about. This program has deepened our sense of family as school.
Weekly Mass and Adoration St. Mary students attend a student-planned, all-school Mass every Thursday. It is important to celebrate the Mass together as a school. Each grade, from 4th through 8th, takes a turn in preparing the Mass, reading, bringing up the gifts and singing. They work with their "buddy" grade to make the most of each Mass. Children also attend weekly Adoration on Tuesday, giving them a quiet time to spend with Jesus.
Service Programs:The staff and students at St. Mary School understand the importance of serving others. Either by working at Feed My Starving Children, planning bake sales to raise money for needy families or collecting for the Fallen Officer Fund to help support our Elgin Police Deartment, monthy classroom trips to Heritage Manor, the children do their best to help others be the Hands of Christ. In addition to our annual service projects mentioned above here at St. Mary school, we are always looking to enhance the community around us by reachjing out wiht various service projects. For example, we will be making seasonal donations to the Elgin Crisis Center, St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry and local needy families.
